The US announced plans to deploy long-range missile systems in Germany starting in 2026, as part of a strategic move during talks at NATO’s annual summit. This includes the SM-6 anti-air missile with a range of up to 460km and the Tomahawk cruise missile capable of striking targets over 2,500km away. Additionally, hypersonic weapons with extended range will also be stationed in Germany.
The US decision to deploy these weapons comes after pulling out of the INF treaty in 2019, citing Russia’s violations. Russia, on the other hand, claimed to have abided by the treaty and only resumed missile development in response to US actions in Europe and the Philippines.
The deployment of these missile systems signals a significant shift in the strategic landscape, as the US deepens its military presence in Europe. Previous arms control agreements such as the INF treaty helped ease tensions, but recent developments show a resurgence of geopolitical competition.
