Paraná Waterway Crisis Expected to be Resolved This Year
An extension of the Paraná-Paraguay Waterway Management to Jan de Nul is under consideration as further dredging is needed. Argentina’s General Ports Administration (AGP) owes almost US$80 million to the Belgian dredging company for unpaid services. President Javier Milei’s Government aims to settle this debt and potentially grant Jan de Nul additional work for four years.
The Economy Ministry is exploring the possibility of imposing a tax increase to help offset the debt and improve operational conditions. Jan de Nul’s crucial role in the Waterway’s management is evident, and potential surcharges may be accepted by users for better service. The bidding process for a new operator is expected to start before the end of 2024, aligning with the resolution of the AGP’s financial issues.
