Germany is on high alert after reports emerged of a plot to assassinate the chief executive of arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger. The German government has vowed not to be intimidated by Russian threats and is taking the situation very seriously.
US intelligence uncovered a Russian plan to kill Papperger, who has been vocal about supporting Ukraine’s war effort. German security services were able to protect him, and other defense industry executives supporting Ukraine are also under threat.
Russia denies the reports, calling them fake, but German authorities are wary of Russian threats following previous incidents. The protection of Papperger is now on par with that of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
