Japan’s economy minister, Ken Saito, has issued a warning about potential electricity shortages this summer due to the reliance on older power plants that have a higher risk of sudden outages. Saito emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent any temporary squeezes on power.
Despite securing enough fuel to handle expected surges in power demand as temperatures rise, Saito urged people to be mindful of their electricity use by turning off lights in empty rooms. He reassured that there was no immediate need for companies and households to conserve energy.
The economy minister also mentioned that thermal power facilities undergoing maintenance are expected to be back online by the end of the month. Additionally, measures are being discussed to address the growing jet fuel shortages that will come with the increase in inbound flights.
Going forward, government and company officials will collaborate on concrete strategies to monitor demand and secure fuel supply more effectively. Saito’s proactive approach aims to ensure a stable energy supply during the upcoming summer months.
