IPAs leave Clare hotel after 14-month blockade in 80 characters

A group of International Protection Applicants (IPAs) in Co Clare were relocated with just two days’ notice, over a year after local protests erupted over their arrival. Magowna House in Inch became a controversial direct provision center in May 2023, resulting in a standoff and road blockades.

Letters from the Department of Integration revealed that 26 male asylum seekers were notified of their move to Dublin. This sudden relocation followed the blockades by locals who felt the rural townland was unsuitable for a direct provision center.

As the men left, concerns were raised about losing jobs and connections they had built. Some shared their apprehension about starting anew in Dublin after experiencing the friendly atmosphere in Co Clare.

Despite protests, the government had to consider the accommodation shortfall due to a large number of Ukrainian refugees and IPAs. The future use of Magowna House as a direct provision center remains uncertain.

As locals bid farewell to the departing men, concerns were voiced about the impact of sudden relocations on those already facing unstable situations.
