Australian federal police recently made headlines when they arrested a Russian-born married couple for espionage. The husband and wife, both Australian citizens, are accused of obtaining classified Australian Defense Force material with the intent of leaking it to Russian officials. The wife, a 40-year-old private in the ADF working as an information systems technician, allegedly took advantage of her position to access sensitive materials. She even allegedly instructed her husband to log into her official account while she was on leave to gather additional information.
The couple was arrested at their home in Brisbane and charged with preparing for an espionage offense, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in jail. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the severity of the situation, warning against interfering with national interests. He stressed that those who jeopardize national security will be held accountable for their actions.
It’s a story that has captured attention worldwide, shedding light on the ongoing espionage activities between nations. For more details, watch the embedded video above on the espionage trial of a US journalist in Russia.
