Tragedy struck in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal as a devastating bushfire claimed the life of a pensioner, Bangiwe Luthuli, who passed away due to injuries sustained in the fire. This incident marked the second fatality in the five-day-long blaze that has ravaged the region.
Expressing her condolences, uMlalazi mayor Queen Xulu lamented the loss of lives, particularly highlighting the vulnerability of elderly citizens to such disasters. She emphasized the importance of taking more proactive measures to protect the senior members of the community.
In another tragic turn of events, Muntuongabongwa Gazu lost his life while trying to retrieve his identity document from the flames, leaving his brother with severe burns. The fire has also resulted in the destruction of 121 houses, as well as livestock and cars.
Xulu called upon traditional leaders, political figures, and government officials to unite in combating the menace of bushfires and enhancing the safety and security of the local community.
