New Rule Mandates Teaching Kannada in Schools

In a recent development, the Karnataka government has announced a new rule mandating the teaching of Kannada as either the first language or second language in schools affiliated with boards other than the state board. This rule will be enforced starting from the next academic year, affecting new schools seeking approval for establishment.

The decision to implement this rule came after parents challenged a 2015 law mandating Kannada education in schools. The government amended the rules for issuing No Objection Certificates (NOC) to schools and issued a gazette notification regarding the same.

According to a senior education department official, schools must prioritize Kannada education in their NOC application. Failure to do so will result in rejection or withdrawal of the NOC. This rule will mainly impact new schools affiliated with boards other than the state board.

The Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools has expressed concerns over the new rule and urged boards to discuss the matter with the education department. Despite the challenges, the education department has approved the establishment of 164 new schools for the upcoming academic year.

Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving situation.
