Senate proposes bill to carve out new state from Kano

The Senate has introduced a bill calling for the creation of a new state named Tiga from Kano State. Sponsored by Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South, the legislation aims to amend the constitution for this purpose. Kano, with 44 Local Government Areas, raises questions on how the bill intends to split them.

This isn’t the first time a senator has proposed a new state after Senator Ned Nwoko suggested “Anioma” in Southeast in June 2024. Nwoko argued that the Southeast’s five states create an imbalance and more states would address this issue.

In response to educational advancement, Governor Abba Yusuf has reiterated Kano State’s dedication to transforming its educational system for inclusivity and unity. This commitment was reaffirmed during the Kano State Education Recovery Conference at Bayero University.
