Reps investigate Hajj commission for 2024 pilgrimage

The House of Representatives has taken a bold step towards ensuring accountability and efficiency in the National Hajj Commission following the disappointing conduct of the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage. A motion moved by Mr Mohammed Bio led to the establishment of an ad-hoc committee to investigate the activities of NAHCON and FCTA Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, highlighting the need for improved welfare, organization, guidance, and monitoring of Nigerian pilgrims.

The motion, titled “Urgent need to investigate the National Hajj Commission and the Federal Capital Territory Administration Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board,” underscores the significance of the Hajj exercise in Islam and expresses concern over the subpar performance despite substantial budget allocations and support.

With the appointment of Sada Soli as the committee chair, there is hope for positive change in the management and execution of future Hajj exercises. Failure to address the shortcomings identified could tarnish Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage. The committee’s findings are expected within two weeks, paving the way for necessary legislative interventions and improvements in the pilgrimage process.
