President Ruto of Kenya took drastic action by dismissing most of his cabinet after facing violent protests over tax increases. The peaceful demonstrations turned chaotic, with police clashing with protesters and even setting part of the parliament building on fire.
Mainly organized by young Kenyans online, the protests led to Ruto abandoning the finance bill with the tax hikes. In a move to ease tensions, Ruto removed almost all ministers from their positions, excluding a few key members.
The decision came after Ruto listened to the public’s feedback and evaluated his cabinet’s performance. The protests, spearheaded by Gen-Z activists, have now evolved into a broader movement against Ruto’s government.
‘Radical programs’ pledged
Ruto, who campaigned on uplifting the common man, plans to form a new government with a focus on addressing debt, creating jobs, reducing corruption, and eliminating wasteful government spending. However, challenges lie ahead as Ruto aims to regain public trust and calm the ongoing unrest.
Last week, Moody’s downgraded Kenya’s debt rating, citing Ruto’s limited ability to raise taxes and manage debt. Despite facing financial hurdles, Ruto remains committed to implementing new policies to tackle Kenya’s economic challenges.
