Iran Calls for Increase in Intra-BRICS Trade – Political Update

Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, while addressing the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Russia’s St. Petersburg, highlighted the importance of de-dollarization and the use of alternate currencies for trade exchanges among BRICS nations. He emphasized that moving away from the dollar would help eliminate a main leverage used by Washington to pressure emerging economies. Qalibaf cited the successful financial cooperation between Iran and Russia as a model for other BRICS members to follow.

He called for stronger parliamentary cooperation within BRICS to establish new monetary transaction procedures and enhance trade routes for goods and services. Qalibaf identified transportation, energy, trade, and banking as key areas for collaboration among BRICS countries, offering Iran’s Parliament’s readiness to engage in these initiatives.

Additionally, he proposed that BRICS parliaments pass laws to facilitate trade promotion and counteract unilateralism and trade barriers. Qalibaf also suggested that the forum address economic sanctions and coercive measures as significant threats to the security and prosperity of ordinary citizens in BRICS nations.

The forum’s theme, ‘Role of Parliaments in Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security’, aligns with Qalibaf’s calls for greater cooperation in the face of economic challenges.
