Germany to Remove Chinese Components from 5G Networks Over Security Concerns
Germany announced that it will gradually phase out Chinese components from telecom giants Huawei and ZTE in its 5G networks by the end of 2029 due to security concerns. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated that components from Huawei and ZTE will be barred from 5G core networks by the end of 2026 and replaced in 5G access by the end of 2029.
Why is Germany Taking This Step?
5G networks are considered critical infrastructure in Germany, essential for sectors like health, transport, and energy. The decision aims to protect the country’s business location and the communication of its citizens, companies, and the state by reducing security risks and avoiding one-sided dependencies.
China’s Reaction
Beijing responded by urging Germany to evaluate 5G technology providers without political bias. The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized the contributions of companies like Huawei to Europe’s infrastructure and economy while highlighting the absence of evidence that they pose a national security threat.
Sino-German Relations
The move reflects Germany’s efforts to reduce economic dependency on China, as outlined in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Chinese relations strategy. Despite close economic ties, the countries have faced tensions, especially following Germany’s reference to “systemic rivalry” with Beijing.
