Sanders referred to Russia, Iran, and China as “the new Axis powers,” suggesting they are more aligned than the Axis powers in WWII. He cautioned that a third world war could break out within the next five to 10 years if necessary preparations are not made.
Sanders emphasized the importance of rearming and deterring further aggression to prevent potential conflicts. He highlighted the need to address gaps in military capability, modernize armed forces, and enhance societal resilience. Sanders also pointed out the lack of capacity in the British military to undertake operations similar to past conflicts like the invasion of southern Iraq in 2003 or the Falkland Islands in 1982.
With the reduction in the professional army size by the British Ministry of Defence, Sanders warned against relying solely on navy and air power, urging preparedness for potential land wars. The escalating situation in Ukraine has raised concerns among neighboring countries, such as the Baltic states, regarding Russia’s aggressive ambitions and the need for increased border defenses.
