The French president is a lonely, tragic figure whose strange personality has inflicted chaos and carnage on French politics.

Lounging with Emmanuel Macron on France’s Air Force One, I asked who he confides in. Macron responded, “myself.” Despite being captivating, Macron’s demeanor raises questions about his true intentions.

Last month, Macron’s snap election resulted in a political catastrophe, alienating the French people and leaving his centrist coalition in disarray.

Macron’s desperate desire for love and approval contrasts with his political failures and inability to connect with the French populace.

Despised for his flamboyant persona and perceived insincerity, Macron’s ambitious foreign relations tactics have backfired, leaving him politically isolated and estranged from the people he governs.

Trapped in the role of an embattled president, Macron’s inner turmoil and need for affirmation mirror the tragic figure he has become in French politics.
