The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) is optimistic about the future of governance at the local council level after the Supreme Court’s decision to abolish the state and local government joint account. According to CUPP’s National Secretary, Mr. Peter Ameh, this decision will enhance accountability at the third tier of government.
CUPP believes that with the joint account abolished, anti-graft agencies like the EFCC and ICPC can now focus on monitoring the funds allocated to local councils. They agree with the Supreme Court’s stance that state governors have hindered democracy’s progress, especially regarding local council fund management.
The Supreme Court’s judgment is expected to lead to positive development in rural areas, allowing residents to hold accountable those misappropriating funds. CUPP also sees this as a step towards devolving powers and implementing fiscal federalism for self-sufficiency among states.
CUPP emphasizes the need for political will to enable states to generate resources independently, reducing reliance on monthly allocations.
