Former President Jair Bolsonaro faces new legal troubles as the Federal Police investigate government officials accused of spying on journalists and public figures during his tenure. The operation, known as “Operation Last Mile,” is the latest development in a probe into the misuse of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) under Bolsonaro’s administration.
The investigation revealed that Bolsonaro’s government monitored political opponents, obstructed justice, and spread disinformation using government resources. Key documents released shed light on the illegal monitoring of politicians, including Supreme Court justices, which Justice Alexandre de Moraes believes led to an attempted coup in 2023.
The suspects, aware of their illegal actions, used spyware developed by Israeli company Cognyte, acquired by Abin and the Brazilian Army just before Bolsonaro took office. The recent findings have raised concerns about the misuse of power and the erosion of democratic institutions in Brazil.
