Argentine Airline Pilots Strike Against Deregulation

Thursday, July 11th 2024 – 12:25 UTC

The measure has been announced with the winter school recess coming nearer

Argentine airline pilots have announced a strike to protest President Javier Milei’s government’s decision to deregulate the industry and open it up to foreign players. The strike is scheduled for Friday, the last working day before the winter school break and judiciary recess.

The pilots are also demanding a salary increase to cope with inflation. The new policies aim to optimize costs through digitalization, faster procedures, and deregulation of ramp services at airports to increase connectivity in the country.

The Argentine Transportation Ministry believes these changes will lead to greater connectivity, more frequencies, and new airlines, ultimately boosting tourism and making air travel more accessible. Argentina has recently signed open-skies agreements with several countries, with more to follow.

If no resolution is reached, the strike may extend into the first week of the winter holidays, impacting flights operated by Aerolíneas Argentinas pilots.
