Thousands honor victims of 1995 Srebrenica genocide as UN marks annual remembrance day
On the 29th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, 14 victims will finally be laid to rest, identified through DNA analysis. Among them is Mirza Basic’s brother, whose remains were discovered almost three decades later, evoking painful memories of the war years. The genocide, Europe’s only acknowledged after World War II, saw over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys slaughtered by Bosnian Serb forces in July 1995.
Basic, a survivor, draws parallels between the atrocities in Srebrenica and the current situation in Gaza, highlighting the ongoing oppression and genocide in the region. Despite convictions of some perpetrators, many believed to be involved in the genocide continue to hold political positions, sparking outrage among survivors.

Still seeking justice
In 2007, the ICJ characterized the Srebrenica crime as genocide, yet denials persist in Serbia and Republika Srpska. While some perpetrators have been sentenced, many others remain at large, even holding political positions. The fight for justice continues as survivors demand accountability and recognition of the full extent of the atrocities.
