Peace Restored in Manyang, Western Bahr el-Ghazal State
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) reported that normalcy has returned to Manyang in Jur River County of Western Bahr el-Ghazal State. The area, which had been affected by inter-communal violence, saw the deployment of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) bringing peace and stability.
During the South Sudan Independence Day celebration in Wau town, the Western Bahr el-Ghazal UNMISS field coordinator, Sam Mamure, praised the efforts of both Western Bahr el-Ghazal and Warrap states in maintaining law and order. Mamure also called for dialogue and investigations into the human rights abuses that occurred during the conflict last year.
The conflict in Manyang between the Wan-bai community of Western Bahr el-Ghazal and a section of the Apuk Giir of Warrap State resulted in over 100 fatalities and massive displacement. Joint security forces from both states were deployed to contain the situation.
UNMISS is ready to support the states in the reconciliation and justice processes, despite the challenges in global humanitarian assistance. The State Ministry of Agriculture and FAO have been commended for providing tools and seeds to Western Bahr el-Ghazal state.
