A Government minister faced criticism for his handling of the Government’s efforts to combat adolescent obesity, which experts described as an “absolute epidemic.” Minister of State at the Department of Health, Colm Burke, appeared before the Joint Committee on Health where he acknowledged the challenges posed by the marketing of unhealthy foods to children.
Social Democrats TD Róisín Shortall questioned the minister on the regulation of food advertising and expressed concerns about the influence of the alcohol and food industries on public health. Minister Burke appeared uncertain about the role of the newly-established Coimisiún na Meán in regulating food advertising but emphasized the need for industry compliance.
Despite some progress, critics, including Aileen McGloin from Safefood, highlighted the need for stricter measures to tackle obesity. The minister mentioned a decrease in sugar tax revenue as evidence of reduced sugar consumption but acknowledged the ongoing challenges.
The discussion underscored the urgent need for effective policies to address adolescent obesity and promote healthier lifestyles.
