Syrian Airlines Resumes Flights to Saudi Arabia After 12-Year Hiatus
Syria’s national airline has made a triumphant return to Saudi Arabia after a 12-year suspension, signaling a thaw in relations between the two Middle Eastern nations. The first flight, carrying 170 passengers, landed in Riyadh to commemorate the resumption of regular services.
This milestone comes as a result of a slow rapprochement between the Syrian and Saudi governments, who restored diplomatic relations last year. Syrian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ayman Soussan, confirmed that the two countries have agreed to operate one round-trip flight per week between Riyadh and Damascus.
While passenger flights between the two nations were halted in 2012 due to political tensions over Syria’s civil war, recent developments indicate a promising shift in their relationship. Saudi Arabia’s decision to restore ties with Assad’s regime has paved the way for increased cooperation, as evidenced by the resumption of airline services.
