Syrian Airlines resumed regular services to Saudi Arabia after a 12-year hiatus, signaling a growing diplomatic thaw between the two nations. This move follows the restoration of diplomatic relations last year.
The first flight from Damascus to Riyadh, carrying 170 passengers, marked the official resumption of a weekly route agreed upon by both countries. The direct route could expand to include other Saudi cities based on demand.
Flights between Syria and Saudi Arabia were suspended in 2012 due to Riyadh’s disagreement with Bashar Assad’s regime. However, temporary services for pilgrims were reinstated in May, indicating a gradual improvement in relations.
The recent appointment of a new Saudi ambassador to Damascus and Assad’s participation in a summit in Saudi Arabia in 2023 highlight the incremental progress towards reconciliation between the two nations.
