Simplify process and cut costs for heat pump installation

The Need for Sustainable Choices in Insulating and Heating Homes

The Climate Change Advisory Council is urging the Government to take more decisive action to help individuals make sustainable choices in insulating and heating their homes. In a recent report, the council highlighted the importance of doubling the rate of energy upgrades to social homes and providing special support for older individuals to create warmer and more comfortable living spaces.

The council emphasized the necessity for the Government to facilitate the installation of heat pumps in homes and workplaces by making the process more affordable and accessible. Currently, only a small number of heat pumps are being installed each week, despite the vast number of buildings being technically suitable for them.

Additionally, the council is calling for increased grants, better information on heat pumps, and enhanced financial mechanisms to support those on the cusp of energy poverty. The report also stresses the importance of promoting low-carbon materials for construction and incentivizing the renovation of vacant buildings.

To combat climate change effectively, the report underlines the urgent need to transition from fossil fuel heating systems to low-carbon alternatives. While progress has been made, particularly in energy upgrades, the shift towards heat pumps and district heating systems remains a significant challenge.

As we strive to decarbonize the heat sector and improve the resilience of our built environment, the advice of the Climate Change Advisory Council serves as a crucial roadmap for sustainable development in Ireland.
