Fianna Fáil Senator Criticizes Government’s Apology to Thalidomide Survivors
Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has expressed disappointment in her own Government’s apology to thalidomide survivors, deeming it inadequate. Thalidomide, a drug prescribed to pregnant women in the 1950s and 1960s, caused serious birth defects in their children.
The Government announced an enhanced support package, including greater access to health and social care professionals, therapies, home and car adaptations, and more. However, McGreehan believes these measures fall short of addressing the ongoing challenges faced by survivors.
The Irish Thalidomide Association plans to discuss the issue further, while political parties are expected to address it in upcoming meetings. Despite these developments, the Senator’s critique underscores the need for comprehensive support for thalidomide survivors.
