In a significant development, Russia has agreed to early release all Indian citizens serving in its army, as confirmed by India’s foreign ministry. This positive outcome follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Moscow, during which he raised concerns with President Vladimir Putin regarding Indian nationals who were misled into military service in Russia and forced into combat in Ukraine.
Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra announced that Russia has promised the early discharge of all Indian nationals from its army, with 10 already safely repatriated out of the estimated 35-50 individuals involved. These men, largely from impoverished backgrounds, were deceived by agents promising lucrative opportunities but instead found themselves in dangerous situations.
The joint efforts of India and Russia will now focus on returning the remaining Indian citizens home. This development underscores the importance of caution and vigilance when seeking opportunities abroad, as emphasized by the Indian government earlier this year. The two nations have also outlined plans for enhanced cooperation in various sectors, with a goal to increase bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030.
