In war-torn Sudan, the Red Cross faces challenges in accessing many areas due to danger and lack of permission, hindering aid efforts amidst ongoing devastating conflict between the army and paramilitaries. Pierre Dorbes, of the ICRC, emphasized the importance of improving access to help millions in need.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in tens of thousands dead and over 10 million displaced, with many facing acute food insecurity, as per a UN report. Volunteer groups have stepped up to provide meals in areas affected by violence, but logistical obstacles hamper aid distribution.
In Dilling, near the South Sudan border, volunteer Kinda Komi highlighted the dire situation, with no food aid reaching the town and limited access due to ongoing clashes. Half of those in need are left without meals, underscoring the urgent need for increased support in conflict-affected regions.
Despite the challenges, efforts continue to alleviate suffering, but more access and support are crucial to reach all in need amidst the ongoing crisis.
