French President Emmanuel Macron is urging major political parties to form a coalition government in the aftermath of the recent snap elections. While attending the NATO Summit in Washington, Macron emphasized the need for “republican forces” to come together and establish a solid governing coalition through sincere and respectful dialogue.
Macron stated that he would only appoint a new prime minister once a strong majority coalition is formed, allowing time for political parties to reach compromises. In the meantime, the current government will continue to function under outgoing Prime Minister Gabriel Attal.
Despite left-wing parties winning the most seats in the elections, none of the three main blocs secured an absolute majority. The New Popular Front (NFP) from the left alliance won 182 seats, but a majority requires 289 lawmakers. Jean-Luc Melenchon, the leader of France Unbowed, is advocating for the NFP to nominate its own prime minister, while centrist and far-right parties also have significant representation in the National Assembly.
