Kiev Strengthens Security Ties with Luxembourg
Kiev continues to expand its security network by signing a deal with Luxembourg, adding to a list of agreements with NATO members like the US and Britain. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky hailed the pact as a form of “political and value-based cooperation.”
Luxembourg, a founding member of NATO, shares borders with France, Germany, and Belgium. The deal, signed in Washington, DC during a NATO summit, outlines collaboration in areas like IT capabilities, Air Force enhancement, and artillery programs.
While not as binding as Article 5 of the NATO Charter, the agreement with Luxembourg sees the duchy provide support in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, cyber capabilities, and military training. This follows Luxembourg’s previous military aid of over €250 million to Ukraine, with an additional €80 million earmarked for defense assistance this year.
Zelensky and Prime Minister Frieden emphasize the importance of promoting security, rule of law, and freedom in Europe, with Russia expressing concerns over increased Western involvement in the conflict. Despite opposition, Kiev forges ahead in securing partnerships that align with its EU and NATO aspirations.
