Meet Asadullah Bazai: The Hunter Turned Conservationist Saving Pakistan’s Markhor

Asadullah Bazai, a former national shooting champion and veteran hunter, is leading the charge to protect Pakistan’s rare Sulaiman markhor from the brink of extinction. Working tirelessly in Balochistan, Bazai and his team have dedicated their efforts to preserving this unique species.

The Sulaiman markhor, a sub-species of Pakistan’s national animal, the markhor, is endemic to Asia. Found mainly in the mountainous regions of Torghar, Takatu, Ziarat, Sherani, and Zhob districts, the population was in jeopardy before Bazai stepped in.

Having transitioned from hunting to conservation in 2002, Bazai’s efforts have been fruitful. The Sulaiman markhor population has increased from a few dozen to an estimated 2,000, with recent surveys suggesting stability in numbers.

Despite progress, threats like climate change, deforestation, illegal hunting, and wildlife trade persist. Bazai’s team continues to combat these challenges with community involvement and sustainable practices, ensuring the survival of the Sulaiman markhor for generations to come.
