Administration Committee amends border security bill, disappoints legal experts

Latest Updates on Parliament’s Migration Bill

The Administration Committee revealed revisions to the controversial government bill aimed at tackling instrumentalised migration. The changes included expanded access to information for parliament, legal protection for those removed from the country, and clarified actions for border guards.

Despite the revisions, legal experts remain unconvinced about the bill’s compliance with EU law. Professor Juha Raitio raised concerns about potential conflicts with key EU rights such as the right to apply for asylum and the principle of non-refoulement.

The bill allows barring asylum applications at national borders without appeal rights, raising further legal questions. The committee’s attempts to address EU law issues were deemed insufficient by experts.

Despite additional provisions for re-examination of removal orders, concerns persist about violating international obligations. The bill faces opposition from the Green League and Left Alliance, complicating its passage in Parliament.

Stay tuned for the upcoming vote and potential challenges in implementing the bill.
