Stray animals, including cattle and dogs, are causing traffic obstructions and accidents on major roads in Bengaluru, according to the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP). The BTP has urged the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to address this issue promptly.
M N Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), emphasized the seriousness of the problem, stating that stray animals pose a significant risk to motorists. Avoiding stray cattle, especially cows, has become a daily challenge for commuters like Alice John, who stresses the need for a balance between safety and respect for the animals.
Officials from the BBMP’s Animal Husbandry Department acknowledged the space constraints in housing abandoned animals, leading to difficulties in effectively removing stray animals from the roads. To combat this issue, the BBMP is considering increasing fines for allowing stray animals on the road from Rs 600 to Rs 3,000. Additionally, they have proposed establishing cattle shelters in each of the city’s eight zones.
Addressing the stray animal problem is crucial for ensuring road safety in Bengaluru while also respecting the animals that roam the city’s streets.
