Maritime Self-Defense Force Divers Suspected of Fraudulent Allowance Claims
Shocking news has emerged regarding dozens of Maritime Self-Defense Force divers who are believed to have fraudulently received allowances over the years. Sources from the Defense Ministry revealed that these divers have been making false claims for diving allowances, amounting to potentially tens of millions of yen in total.
The divers, who were part of submarine rescue vessels, were entitled to receive up to ¥10,000 per hour based on the risks involved in their missions. An internal investigation in September 2022 uncovered instances where divers made claims for allowances without performing diving operations or exaggerated their working hours.
In response to this scandal, the Defense Ministry plans to have the divers repay the allowances and impose disciplinary actions. A committee has been established to investigate all units with divers to ensure the integrity of allowance claims moving forward.
Defense Minister Minoru Kihara emphasized the seriousness of the situation and vowed to take strict action once all facts are confirmed. This scandal adds to a string of recent issues within the MSDF, prompting the Chief of Staff Adm. Ryo Sakai to reportedly consider resignation.
