[Opinion] Independent probe key to uncovering truth in Marine death scandal

Police investigation clears commander of 1st Marines Division in Marine’s death

Lim Seong-geun, commander of 1st Marines Division, speaks to press after being questioned by police in relation to alleged cover-up of Marine’s death.

The provincial police investigating the death of Marine Chae in July 2023 during flood rescue work released results exonerating former division commander Lim Seong-geun. Despite evidence pointing to negligence, Lim was not charged after a year-long investigation. This outcome suggests external pressure influenced the decision to protect higher-ranking officials.

Questions linger over the logic behind not charging Lim, with suspicions of interference from President Yoon Suk-yeol. The police’s decision has raised the need for an independent probe. The trial of Marine Corps investigator Park Jeong-hun also sheds light on potential cover-up attempts by outside forces.

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials must further investigate these claims. For more information, visit the original Korean article button to original article
