Morocco to explore AI regulations safeguarding elections from manipulation

The Justice Minister Andelatif Ouahbi is taking a proactive approach to protect the democratic process from potential manipulation through artificial intelligence (AI). He announced plans for a conference in September to discuss the legal framework for AI, aiming to have regulations in place before the next elections.

Ouahbi highlighted the dangers of AI in spreading misinformation and manipulating voters, emphasizing the need for legislation to safeguard democracy. He stressed the importance of addressing the ethical and legal challenges posed by AI, especially in ensuring accountability for its decisions.

At a previous symposium on AI and human rights, the minister expressed concerns about the impact of AI on rights and freedoms, particularly in the context of social media and privacy violations. He called on Parliament to act swiftly in enacting laws to regulate AI before the 2026 elections, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
