In a recent court session in Iran, Judge Amir-Reza Dehghani emphasized the importance of anti-terrorism conventions, which require governments to prosecute and punish individuals accused of terrorist acts within their jurisdiction. He highlighted the principle of extradition and the obligation of governments to hand over terrorists to other countries upon request.
Judge Dehghani expressed frustration that member states of these conventions are not allowed to host terrorists or issue visas to them. He also noted that the accused in the case have been notified according to the Criminal Procedure Law, but none have submitted a lawyer or a defense.
Highlighting Iran’s status as a major victim of terrorism, Dehghani lamented the absence of a permanent international criminal court to address such cases. He reaffirmed the court’s commitment to following international rules and stated that extradition is a legitimate solution in the case of the MKO, a notorious group responsible for over 17,000 deaths in Iran through terrorist attacks.
The court’s proceedings will continue until completion, emphasizing the importance of adhering to international protocols in addressing terrorism.
