ANI sues Wikipedia for Rs 2 crore defamation in Delhi HC

A lawsuit has been filed by ANI Media Private Limited against Wikipedia in the Delhi High Court for an alleged defamatory description, as reported by Live Law. Justice Navin Chawla issued a notice on ANI’s plea, seeking interim relief with the case set for hearing on August 20.

ANI is seeking to restrain Wikipedia from publishing content that is allegedly defamatory on the news agency’s page and has demanded Rs 2 crore in damages. According to Wikipedia’s page on ANI, the news agency has been criticized for various reasons.

Advocate Sidhanth Kumar representing ANI stated that the content is defamatory, emphasizing that Wikipedia cannot act as a private entity as it is a public utility platform. Justice Chawla mentioned that Wikipedia is entitled to its opinions and will provide an explanation.

ANI has filed a suit against Wikimedia Foundation and its officials for allegedly publishing false and defamatory content to tarnish the news agency’s reputation. They also claim that Wikimedia officials actively participated in removing edits to maintain the false content.
