Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Beijing to discuss helping Russia and Ukraine restart direct negotiations. Orban’s visit comes ahead of a NATO summit and follows visits to Russia and Ukraine. Critics have accused Orban of undermining the EU’s stance on the conflict. Xi emphasized the need for major powers to generate positive energy to facilitate a ceasefire.
Following the meeting, Orban praised China for its role in creating peace conditions and labeled his visit as a “Peace mission 3.0.” Orban, known for his pro-Russia stance, has refrained from supplying weapons to Ukraine, unlike other EU leaders. China has positioned itself as a neutral party in the conflict, supporting Russia economically but claiming to not send lethal aid.
Hungary has become a major target for Chinese investments, especially in the electric vehicle sector. Orban’s “Eastern opening” policy aims to strengthen ties with China and other Asian nations. Despite criticisms from the EU, Orban’s close relations with both Xi and the Kremlin have solidified Hungary’s position as a key player in the region.
