The US military recently completed the withdrawal of its personnel from the 101st Air Base in Niger, near the airport in Niamey. This operation, carried out in cooperation with the Nigerian armed forces, went smoothly and ahead of schedule, with no complications.
According to a joint statement from Niger’s Ministry of Defense and the US Department of Defense, the focus now shifts to withdrawing from the $100 million drone base near Agadez, which has been crucial in providing intelligence on militant-linked groups.
Following a military coup in Niger last year, the ruling junta requested the withdrawal of around 1,000 US soldiers from the country. The United States has until mid-September to comply with this request and remove its forces from Niger’s territory.
This move marks a significant shift in the presence of US military personnel in the region and reflects evolving dynamics in West Africa.
