The South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance Stands Firm at Tumaini Initiative

The South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA) and other opposition groups at the peace talks in Nairobi, known as the Tumaini Initiative, have declared their refusal to sign any agreement with the government until the National Security Service Act is repealed. Leaders of various factions, including Gen. Pagan Amum Okiech, Gen. Paul Malong Awan, Gen. Stephen Buoy Rolnyang, and Gen. Mario Loku Thomas Jada, highlighted the dangerous decisions made by the transitional government in Juba that jeopardize peace in the country.

They expressed concerns about the extension of the government’s tenure, scheduling of national elections, and the oppressive National Security Service Act. The opposition leaders stressed the need for genuine democracy, a civilian intelligence service, and a democratic permanent constitution through the Tumaini Consensus. They emphasized that the Tumaini Initiative is not just about implementing the R-ARCSS but about outlining a rescue plan for South Sudan’s future.

The opposition is committed to upholding accountability, transparency, and meaningful progress towards lasting peace and democratic transformation in South Sudan. They urge the government to prioritize the people’s interests and refrain from actions that undermine the peace process.
