Jubilation and stunned silence: France reacts to exit polls

French President Emmanuel Macron has asked his prime minister, Gabriel Attal, to stay on to ensure the country’s stability after election results left no party with an outright majority. Despite losing seats, Ensemble came second in the parliament election, leaving French politics in deadlock.

The New Popular Front, a left-wing alliance, aims to choose a prime minister, but finding a candidate acceptable to all parties poses a challenge. President Macron emphasized the need for calm amid warnings of an impending financial crisis.

Meanwhile, Marine Le Pen of the far-right RN party remains optimistic about the future, despite her party’s electoral setback. She is set to lead a new grouping in the European Parliament, aligning with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
