KP polio drives hindered as children unvaccinated due to ‘flimsy’ demands in Pakistan.

In the midst of a global battle against polio, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands out as a success story, having remained polio-free this year so far. However, the success is overshadowed by the frustration of vaccine campaign experts faced with new reasons for parental refusal to immunize their children, leaving them vulnerable to the crippling effects of poliomyelitis.

Recent anti-polio campaigns in April and June saw over 21,000 children in various districts of the province remain unvaccinated due to demands made by parents and community elders. These demands ranged from resolution of boundary disputes to provision of basic utilities like electricity and water.

Violent attacks on vaccinators further complicate the situation, with a total of 10 incidents resulting in fatalities and injuries. Experts warn that unless these administrative challenges are addressed, the province may witness a resurgence of polio cases, undermining years of progress towards eradication.

It is crucial for the government to take proactive measures to ensure that every child receives the necessary polio vaccines, as the consequences of inaction could be dire. The battle against polio requires a united front, with both communities and authorities working together to protect the health of future generations.
