Iran’s new president promises unity in debut address amid high hopes

Iran’s newly elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian, delivered his first public address, highlighting the need for collaboration with parliament and the judiciary to address the country’s challenges. Pezeshkian, a reformist lawmaker, won the presidential runoff vote against conservative Saeed Jalili with a significant voter turnout of 49.8%.

In his speech at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini shrine, Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among government branches to navigate through crises and strengthen national development. He also reached out to supporters of his rival, urging them to join hands for Iran’s prosperity.

Following his victory, Pezeshkian met with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who expressed satisfaction with the election outcome and urged the president-elect to utilize the country’s resources for progress. Leaders from Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait, congratulated Pezeshkian on his election, expressing wishes for bilateral cooperation and regional stability.

Leaders from Gulf countries sent congratulatory messages to President-elect Pezeshkian, emphasizing the importance of strengthening relations and promoting peace in the region. The reformist candidate’s victory marks a new chapter for Iran following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of the previous president and foreign minister.
