Hiroshima criticized for inviting Israel to peace conference

The Hiroshima city government’s decision to invite Israel to its annual peace ceremony commemorating the atomic bomb attack has sparked controversy. While Russia and Belarus have been excluded in previous years due to the Ukraine war, Israel’s inclusion has raised eyebrows.

Tel Aviv’s attendance at the ceremony, alongside other nuclear powers like Britain and France, comes with a call for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza. Despite facing international condemnation for its actions in Gaza, Israel’s presence at the event is being considered with hopes for a positive outcome.

India, another nuclear nation outside the Non-Proliferation Treaty, has agreed to participate in the ceremony, while China’s response is still pending. The Nagasaki city government is also considering inviting Israel to its ceremony on August 9 amidst ongoing debate.

The conflict in Gaza, which started with an attack by Hamas in October 2023, has resulted in thousands of casualties and widespread destruction. Israel’s actions have been condemned as potential genocide, with the International Court of Justice ordering a halt to military operations in affected areas.
