Constitutional Law Committee approves Border Security Act

The Parliament’s Constitutional Law Committee recently released a statement regarding a government bill for a border security act. The committee believes that the controversial act can be enacted as a temporary special act, despite some opposition within the group.

Chairperson Heikki Vestman stated that with amendments by the Administration Committee, the bill can proceed as a limited derogation of the constitution. The committee also requested further adjustments to the bill related to information used in migrant cases and criteria for entering applicants into the asylum procedure.

While the bill has faced criticism for potentially violating international treaties and human rights obligations, the Social Democratic Party is calling for revisions to clarify certain provisions. The fate of the bill rests in the hands of opposition parties, with some members already planning to vote against it.

Despite the ongoing debate, the Administration Committee is set to discuss the bill further with a possible final vote taking place this week. Stay tuned for updates on this important piece of legislation.
