Colombia’s Deforestation Drops by 36% in 2023
Colombia saw a significant 36% decrease in deforestation in 2023, a positive development driven by President Gustavo Petro’s government’s commitment to protecting the Amazon rainforest. The Environment Ministry reported a reduction from 1,235sq km in 2022 to just over 792sq km last year.
Environment Minister Susana Muhamad highlighted the progress but acknowledged the ongoing battle against illicit activities. Specifically in the Amazon region, deforestation dropped by 38% to around 443sq km.
Petro’s environmental protection initiatives, which include limiting agribusiness expansion, have contributed to the decline. Peace talks and financial incentives for farmers have also played a crucial role in achieving a 23-year low in deforestation.
Though the decrease is promising, environmental experts warn of increased deforestation in 2024 due to dry conditions exacerbated by El Nino. Colombia, along with other South American countries, signed a declaration to protect the Amazon and will host the COP16 United Nations biodiversity summit this year in Cali.
