Cape storms cause floods, road closures, mudslides in settlements

Cape Town’s disaster coordinating team is working hard to provide humanitarian relief to residents in flooded informal settlements in Strand and Macassar. The team is also addressing numerous road closures caused by the heavy rainfall, with reports of a mudslide along the N1 over the weekend.

The ongoing rain is expected to continue in the coming days, prompting safety assessments in Philippi, Asanda Village, and Mfuleni. Efforts are underway to provide shelter and assistance to those affected by the severe weather, including a distribution base set up by Gift of the Givers in Khayelitsha.

The roads department is conducting inspections in Kalk Bay and pumping water from Highlands Estate to mitigate further impacts. Residents are urged to exercise caution while traveling, as the risk of flooded roads persists despite clearance efforts.

With the continued collaboration of local and national authorities, Cape Town is striving to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents amidst the challenging weather conditions.
