Argentina’s Milei absent from Mercosur meeting in Asunción

Leaders from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Paraguay are meeting for the 64th Summit of Mercosur and Associated States in Asunción, Paraguay. President Milei’s absence highlights tensions, with the event being a rare occurrence in history. During his trip to Brazil, Mr. Milei chose to meet with former President Jair Bolsonaro instead of President Lula.

At the summit, Argentina’s Foreign Affairs Minister will represent President Milei to discuss Argentina’s economic crisis. There is a call for greater economic flexibility in the region to boost regional trade. Bolivia’s incorporation into Mercosur is also a highlight, with President Arce promulgating the inclusion after the Senate approval.

Following a failed coup attempt in Bolivia, regional leaders have condemned the incident. However, Argentina’s response differs, causing a diplomatic rift. Lula will travel to Bolivia for talks with President Arce to address the recent crisis, with no scheduled meeting with Evo Morales.
