Turkmenistan’s Ambassador to Belgium, Sapar Palvanov, recently showcased the country’s commitment to renewable energy at a round table in Brussels focusing on Central Asia’s energy potential and green policy. The event, attended by regional ambassadors, European companies, and research institutes, highlighted Turkmenistan’s emphasis on diversifying its energy sector and harnessing renewable sources, particularly solar energy with its 3,000 hours of sunlight annually.
Palvanov outlined Turkmenistan’s efforts to reduce methane emissions and join the Global Methane Pledge, with a roadmap for international cooperation approved in June 2023. The country has also taken practical steps towards sustainability, such as launching the eco-friendly Arkadag smart city, operating a 10 MW hybrid power plant in the Balkan region, and constructing a 100 MW solar power plant in the Lebap region.
By investing in renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, Turkmenistan aims to decrease reliance on fossil fuels and enhance economic sustainability. The region’s abundant renewable energy potential makes it a promising frontier for clean energy development, aligning with the government’s vision for a greener and more resilient economy.
