Mizoram CM tells PM Modi: No pushing back Bangladeshi refugees

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the situation of Zo ethnic people from Bangladesh seeking refuge in Mizoram. Lalduhoma emphasized that Mizoram cannot push back or deport these refugees, particularly those belonging to the Bawm tribe, as they have been fleeing a military offensive in Bangladesh. The Chief Minister also raised other issues such as relocating the Assam Rifles’ base and implementing the state’s hand-holding policy.

The Zo Reunification Organisation criticized the Border Security Force for pushing back Bangladeshi refugees trying to enter Mizoram. The organization represents Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi tribes from India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Lalduhoma urged the Centre to understand Mizoram’s position and provide support for the refugees.

Overall, the meeting highlighted the complexities of the refugee situation in Mizoram and the need for a collaborative approach to ensure the safety and well-being of those seeking shelter in the state.
